Australia has no native apes. No primate has ever been known to inhabit the Australian continent — with one enormous, troubling exception. The Yowie: a massive, hairy, bipedal creature seven to twelve feet tall, reported across eastern Australia since before European arrival and deeply embedded in Aboriginal Dreamtime tradition.

Aboriginal peoples across multiple language groups have names for the creature — Yahoo, Quinkin, Doolagahl, Joogabinna, and dozens more — each describing a large, hair-covered, man-like being that inhabits the remote forests and mountains of the Great Dividing Range. These are not casual legends; they are woven into ceremonial life, rock art, and oral histories that stretch back tens of thousands of years.

European encounters began almost immediately after colonization. In 1789, the first fleet's records contain references to a large, ape-like creature in the bush near Sydney. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, settlers, bushmen, and explorers reported encounters with enormous, hairy, bipedal figures in the Blue Mountains, the Atherton Tablelands, and the Gold Coast hinterland.

In 1978, a group of campers near Springbrook in Queensland reported a terrifying nighttime encounter with a creature they estimated at ten feet tall, covered in dark brown hair, with a flat face and powerful arms. It circled their camp, emitting a deep, guttural growl and leaving footprints seventeen inches long. "It wasn't a bear — we don't have bears. It wasn't a man — no man is that big. We don't know what it was, but it was real," one witness stated.

The Yowie presents a zoological paradox: there should be no bipedal apes in Australia. The continent separated from other landmasses millions of years before apes evolved. And yet, the reports persist — thousands of them, across 200 years of European documentation and countless millennia of Aboriginal knowledge. Either every Aboriginal nation independently invented the same creature, or something walks in the Australian bush that science has not yet explained.
