Yeren — Cryptid Encyclopedia

In the mountainous forests of Hubei Province, China — a landscape of towering limestone peaks, deep gorges, and forests so dense that sunlight barely reaches the floor — something has been seen for millennia. The Yeren, or "Wild Man," is China's version of Bigfoot, and the Chinese government has taken it seriously enough to launch official scientific expeditions.

The Yeren is described as six to eight feet tall, covered in reddish-brown or reddish-orange hair (distinctly different from the dark-haired Bigfoot), with a flat face, a heavy brow ridge, long powerful arms, and a bipedal gait. Witnesses describe it as more gracile than the North American Bigfoot — more human in proportions, with a face that is unsettlingly close to human.

In 1976, six cadres from the Shennongjia Forestry District reported a close encounter with a Yeren on a rural highway. Their detailed report triggered one of the largest cryptid investigations in history: the Chinese Academy of Sciences organized multiple expeditions into the Shennongjia mountains between 1976 and 1981, involving hundreds of researchers. The expeditions collected hair samples, footprints, and fecal matter attributed to the Yeren but never obtained definitive proof.

The hair samples were particularly interesting. Analysis showed they did not match any known primate species, including humans. They were coarser than human hair, with a reddish pigmentation and a cross-section that differed from both ape and human samples.

The Shennongjia region remains one of the most biodiverse areas in China, home to the golden snub-nosed monkey and other rare species. If an unknown primate survives anywhere in eastern Asia, this impenetrable wilderness is where it would be found.
