In Zulu mythology, the Mamlambo is a river deity — a massive, serpentine creature that dwells in the deep pools of South Africa's rivers. But in 1997, the Mamlambo became something much more immediate when a series of deaths along the Mzintlava River near Mount Ayliff in the Eastern Cape were attributed to the creature. At least nine people were found dead in or near the river, their bodies displaying a horrifying commonality: their faces had been mutilated, and their brains and blood had been extracted.

The Mamlambo is described as approximately 65 feet long, with a horse-like head, a long serpentine neck, short stumpy legs, and a body that glows with a bioluminescent green light in the dark water. Its most terrifying attribute is its method of killing: it drags victims underwater, then consumes their brains and blood while leaving the rest of the body largely intact.

"The bodies were found face-down in the river. Their faces were gone — eaten away. The brains were missing. The blood was drained. This is the Mamlambo." — A local villager, quoted during the 1997 events.

South African authorities attributed the deaths to drowning and natural decomposition (crabs and other scavengers can consume soft tissue post-mortem). But the local community was unconvinced. They knew what the Mamlambo did, and the condition of the bodies matched the ancient descriptions precisely.

In Zulu tradition, the Mamlambo can also shapeshift, appearing as a beautiful woman to lure victims to the river's edge. It is associated with witchcraft — some believe it can be summoned and controlled by powerful sangomas (traditional healers) for dark purposes.

The Mzintlava River remains feared. Locals avoid its deeper pools after dark. Whatever took those nine lives in 1997 — natural causes or something older and hungrier — the Mamlambo's presence is felt along its banks to this day.
