In the swampy bottomlands outside Fouke, Arkansas — a town so small it doesn't have a traffic light — something has been moving through the woods since at least 1946. The Fouke Monster, a hulking, ape-like creature standing roughly seven feet tall, covered in long reddish-brown hair, with glowing red eyes and a stench described as a combination of wet dog and rotting vegetation.

The creature became national news in May 1971, when Bobby Ford reported that a large, hairy creature reached through a window of his home and grabbed him. Ford was found with scratches on his back and in a state of genuine shock. His family reported seeing the creature circling the house on multiple occasions. A neighbor, Ernest Walraven, reported finding three-toed footprints — 17.5 inches long and 7 inches wide — in the muddy soil around the Ford home.

The sightings inspired Charles B. Pierce's 1972 docudrama film The Legend of Boggy Creek, which became a massive drive-in hit, grossing $25 million. The film brought global attention to the small town, and sightings have continued in the decades since.

What distinguishes the Fouke Monster from other Bigfoot-type creatures is the consistency and persistence of reports. Witnesses across multiple decades describe the same creature — seven feet tall, three-toed, reeking, with reddish hair and red eyes. The bottomland swamps of Miller County, with their impenetrable thickets and vast, roadless expanses, provide exactly the kind of habitat that could conceal a large primate.
