False Face — Cryptid Encyclopedia

Of all the cryptids in our encyclopedia, False Face may be the most unsettling — because he looked almost normal.

Throughout the 1990s, residents of Leitchfield, Kentucky — a small town of a few thousand people in rural Grayson County — reported sporadic encounters with what appeared to be an older man walking through town after dark. From a distance, nothing seemed wrong. A slightly stooped figure in a flat cap, flannel shirt, and work pants. Just another old-timer out for an evening walk.

But anyone who got within a few yards realized something was terribly wrong. The man had no face. No eyes, no nose, no mouth — just a smooth, unbroken expanse of human skin, like a department store mannequin cast from a real person. The surface had the color, pores, and texture of elderly skin, but with no openings of any kind. Completely hairless from the neck up. Frozen in a neutral, blank expression.

He never spoke. He never acknowledged the people who saw him. He never ran or showed aggression. He just walked, calmly and deliberately, through the streets of a town where everyone knows everyone — and no one ever knew who he was.

The sightings clustered between 1992 and 1998, always at night, always the same figure walking alone. Teenagers reportedly followed him down an alley off Public Square only to find it empty. After the late 1990s, the reports stopped entirely. He was never identified, never explained, and never seen again.
