April 1973. Enfield, Illinois — population barely 600. Over the course of several nights, residents reported a creature unlike anything in the field guides: short, gray-skinned, with three stumpy legs, tiny arms, and enormous pink eyes that glowed in the dark.

The most dramatic encounter belonged to Henry McDaniel. On the night of April 25, he heard scratching at his front door. When he opened it, the creature was standing on his porch. McDaniel grabbed a pistol and fired at point-blank range. The creature hissed — a wet, sibilant sound — and bounded away in enormous leaps, covering 50 feet in three jumps despite its three-legged anatomy. McDaniel called the police. They found scratches on his door and strange tracks in the yard.

Over the following nights, other residents reported seeing the creature leaping onto roofs, scratching at windows, and moving through the darkness with unnatural speed. Armed patrols were organized. The Illinois State Police were called in. Despite the manhunt, the creature was never captured or conclusively identified.

The Enfield Horror's three-legged body plan — with short, stumpy arms and enormous glowing eyes — doesn't match any known animal, and its ability to leap great distances on three legs defies biomechanical explanation.

"If they see it, they can shoot it." — An Illinois State Trooper, frustrated after multiple reports.
